a tour of the Muree Brewery
The official name of Pakistan is the "Islamic Republic of Pakistan." The sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages are prohibited by both secular and sharia law. Depending on which part of the country you're in, violating this law can earn you anything ranging from a stern reprimand to a death sentence.
The Murree Brewery, despite all of this, has managed to keep its doors open in Pakistan since 1860. It is Pakistan's only licensed brewery, and is authorized to sell -- under strict rules and heavy restrictions -- to the country's tiny hindu and Christian minority populations. This morning, thanks to a friend, I was given a tour of the facility by the manager, Mr. Sabii. Mr. Sabii, formerly a major in the Pakistani Army, run a tight shop.
While photos are nice, nothing quite captures the industrial majesty of heavy machinery at work like video.
Barley-sorting machine.
